Saluki (Azawakh)

Weighing 40–65 lb (18.1–29.5 kg) and standing 23–28 in (58.4–71.1 cm) tall, the Saluki is a large representative of the Hound Group. It currently ranks #141 in AKC registration popularity. Its history begins in Middle East, where the breed was developed for its characteristic work. Many owners just call them Azawakhs. As with most breeds, males occupy the top of the size range.

How long do Salukis live? Based on published breed data, a typical lifespan is 10–17 years. Lifespan is influenced by size, since smaller dogs generally outlive larger ones, alongside genetics, body weight, dental care and regular veterinary checkups. Keeping a Saluki lean, exercised and current on preventive care is the most practical way to reach the upper end of that range. Apartments can work with a solid exercise routine, though more space is preferable. The coat releases little hair, so lint rollers stay mostly idle.
