Can dogs eat sausage?

Only with precautions. Sausages concentrate every problem meat: heavy salt, fat, garlic and onion seasoning, and sometimes nutmeg or fennel. Breakfast sausage and bratwurst are frequent trash-raiding finds that end in vomiting and pancreatitis risk. Plain cooked chicken or turkey delivers the same enthusiasm with none of the seasoning load.

Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pancreatitis risk. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
