Can dogs eat lamb?

Only with precautions. Lamb is a safe, digestible protein for dogs and a staple of limited-ingredient diets for allergy-prone animals. The cautions are preparation: lamb fat is abundant, so trim it, and never share lamb chops cooked with garlic, rosemary-heavy rubs or mint sauces. Plain cooked lamb meat is a healthy occasional addition.

Watch for pancreatitis from fatty cuts, vomiting from seasoned preparations. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
