Can dogs eat pistachios?

Only with precautions. Pistachios themselves are not toxic, but shells cause choking and intestinal damage, and pistachios are prone to Aspergillus mold that produces aflatoxins. Salted versions add a sodium load. An occasional shelled, unsalted nut is tolerable; the shell bowl left on the coffee table is the real hazard.

Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, choking on shells. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
